Louise Élisabeth Vigée Le Brun

Louise, Graphite, 3.5 X 5in/ 8.9 X 12.7cm, C.nick, 2013
I listed Louise Élisabeth Vigée Le Brun as one of my inspirations in this post, so I’m very happy to do a portrait of her. I love her style, which is odd because I don’t consider Rococo a great influence to my art. Her use of colour is, well, it does wonderful things to my synesthetic senses. Her paintings of people are expressive and their personalities really shine through. She is an artist I very much admire.

Louise Élisabeth Vigée Le Brun is one of the artists I admire most. Her paintings of people are expressive. Her use of colour does wonderful things to my synesthetic senses. Cloth is rendered exceptionally in her work, texture, colour, form, everything about it makes you want to reach out and touch it.

Great Hag

This is the first time I’ve ever done anything like this and so I really just playing around. My inspiration is from a folktale of how the Great Hag blocked a spring at the top of Ben Cruachan with a giant stone. Well, one night she fell asleep and the spring flooded the valley below, she was so distraught at seeing lives lost and ruined that she herself turned into a stone. I want to revisit this one day and perhaps make the whole story.

Sidewalk of Knots by C.nick

Sidewalk of Knots
So this is my Celtic knotwork done with sidewalk chalk, charcoal and soft pastels. I got a book about Celtic knots at the library and decided that a sidewalk would be the perfect place to practice this art form. I found that it was very open regarding space and let me think about manging space in ways that were different than how I manage it on paper. It took about three evenings to create and there was a minor mishap with water but for all that it turned out really well.

Wind and Rain

I am FINALLY done! It took much longer than it really needed to. This was inspired by the song "Wind and Rain", a folk song filled with sibling jealousy, murder and haunted musical instruments. I did this with inks and watercolour on calligraphy parchment.

This my favourite version of the song, sung by Julie Fowlis
